About Dr Zaheer Moolla
Dr Zaheer Moolla obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Pretoria.
He completed his internship and community service in KwaZulu-Natal before specialising in General Surgery at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He subsequently completed sub-specialist training in Surgical Gastroenterology (Colorectal) both locally and internationally, including advanced training in the Netherlands and the United States. In 2012, he obtained his Master’s degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Following the completion of his sub-specialist training, Dr Moolla worked for several years at Addington Hospital before entering private practice in Umhlanga, where he continues to provide advanced surgical care.
Today, Dr Moolla is highly proficient in open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. His extensive skill set encompasses the full spectrum of general surgical procedures, with a particular interest in Surgical Oncology. He has a passion for managing complex surgical cases, particularly those involving the gastrointestinal tract, and is committed to delivering the highest standard of patient care.
As a surgical futurist, Dr Moolla continues to champion the integration of cutting-edge technologies and modern surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes and help shape the future of surgery in South Africa. His interests include the adoption of artificial intelligence in healthcare and simulation-based surgical training, ensuring patients benefit from the latest advancements in surgical innovation.
Leadership, Academic & Professional Involvement
Dr Zaheer Moolla is recognised as the first and only certified Robotic General Surgeon in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as the only Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA)-certified Colorectal Surgeon in the KwaZulu-Natal private sector, positioning him at the forefront of surgical innovation and excellence in the province.
Dr Moolla is actively involved in academia, teaching, research, and professional leadership. He serves as an examiner for the Surgical Gastroenterology Subspecialty Certificate Examination and as a reviewer for both local and international scientific journals. He also continues to practise and teach in the public healthcare sector, where he is committed to transferring knowledge and advanced surgical skills to trainee doctors and surgeons.
Dr Moolla currently serves as the President of the South African Colorectal Society (SACRS), the leading professional body representing colorectal surgeons in South Africa. In this role, he is dedicated to advancing standards of patient care, education, research, and innovation within the colorectal subspecialty.
